Ingolstadt, July 25, 2014 – Automotive manufacturers AUDI AG, BMW Group and Daimler AG together launched an initiative within the openMDM Working Group under the Eclipse Foundation (www.eclipse.org), which aims to promote the development and distribution of open source tools for measurement data management based on the ASAM ODS standard (www.asam.net). Other founding members are the software companies GIGATRONIK GmbH, science + computing ag, Canoo Engineering AG, HighQSoft GmbH and Peak Solution GmbH. In the automotive industry, verification procedures during product development create an ever growing volume and diversity of data. To ensure that data is interpreted and compared correctly at all times, even from a different location or at different times, test data from different test systems needs to be documented vendor-independently and with descriptive information (referred to as metadata). The industry-wide established format for this is the "Open Data Service (ODS)" standard of the "Association for Standardisation of Automation and Measuring Systems (ASAM)", in short ASAM ODS. In recent years, an open community of about 30 vehicle manufacturers, suppli-ers and service providers established the modular method and software system openMDM for the quick and cost-effective creation of ASAM ODS based solutions on the basis of existing software, configurations and administration. The establishment of the openMDM Eclipse Working Group (openmdm.org) created a new organizational framework which makes it possible to push improvements and the international distribution of openMDM more intensively. The openMDM Working Group helps channel the diverse requirements for openMDM better, making it possible to initiate, plan and jointly fund Eclipse open source projects for new developments and improvements, as well as to maintain openMDM software components. Additionally, processes exist for quality assurance and configuration and version management of openMDM software components. Various bodies coordinate the work done by the openMDM Working Group. The tasks and responsibilities of these bodies and their consisting of openMDM Working Group members is set down in the openMDM Working Group Charter. This also stipulates that there is one representative of the ASAM e.V. board in the Steering Committee of the openMDM Working Group. The "Driver Members" of the Working Group, in particular, see openMDM as a strategic platform for the implementation of applications in the area of test and measurement data management. This is why they are personally invested in maintaining the openMDM Working Group permanently. The current "Driver Members" are AUDI AG, die BMW Group and Daimler AG. The Eclipse openMDM Working Group is of course open to other vehicle manufacturers, suppliers and service providers at any time. Throughout the sector, further renowned companies from all over the world have already expressed an interest in becoming a member of the openMDM Working Group. The first concrete Eclipse Open Source project has already started: Based on the new openMDM 5 architecture, joint work is being done to further develop the openMDM core system as well as the software components for front-end web technologies and rich clients.
