On Oct 26th, 2021 the Oniro project was officially launched as part of the Eclipse Foundation open source ecosystem. As Oniro is about to celebrate its first anniversary, we are excited to announce two new guest members:
- Cubit Innovation Labs
- Politecnico Milano - Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria
Oniro is a vendor-neutral, open source, distributed operating system platform for consumer and IoT devices. It's the ideal platform for enabling interoperability and communication across all device classes--from tiny embedded sensors and actuators, to feature-rich smart appliances and mobile companions.
Oniro is a game-changing technology and from its inception has grabbed the attention of IoT industry players. Designed with modularity in mind, it offers greater levels of flexibility and application portability across a broad spectrum of devices, with the goal of reducing technology silos and making communication between devices smoother and more efficient. Device makers, app developers, open source communities, R&D labs and corporate enterprises can all benefit from Oniro.
About Cubit Innovation Labs
Cubit is an R&I-focused small-sized enterprise specialised in the design and realisation of custom and low-power electronic devices, monitoring and control systems, wireless & wired communication solutions, and Internet of Things (IoT) systems and services for sectors such as industrial automation, smart energy, smart city, environmental monitoring, wearables, safety, tracking.
By joining the Oniro working group, Cubit will collaborate on open source software, contributing to the technical progress and market expansion of the Oniro platform, especially in the IoT and microcontroller area, while taking advantage of Oniro for the development and operation of its custom devices.
About Politecnico Milano
Politecnico di Milano is the largest technical university in Italy and offers undergraduate, graduate and higher education courses in engineering, architecture, and design. Within the Politecnico di Milano, the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingengeria (DEIB) is one of the largest European ICT (information and communication technology) departments. With nearly 1000 members, including researchers, collaborators, PhD students, and technical and administrative staff, DEIB is a vital institution promoting education, fundamental and applied research, and technology transfer to companies. DEIB has consolidated competencies in systems and control, computer science and engineering, electronics, telecommunications, bioengineering, and electrical engineering. A research group from the computer science and engineering area is currently working on Oniro.
Within the Oniro project, the DEIB research unit is working on EDDIE, a middleware capable of delivering a unified global view of the ecosystem, so that the various devices are no longer seen as individual entities with specific resources, but as a unified pool of virtual resources that can be exploited for efficient execution of any application.
Oniro members
The number of contributors to the Oniro project continues to increase and we would like to thank all those working to make Oniro a success.
A warm welcome to our newest members!
