Opto 22 introduces new groov RIO model with expanded Sparkplug B integration

New edge input/output module captures legacy device and I/O signal data with embedded Ignition 8 protocol driver suite.

Temecula, CA - June 8, 2021 — California-based industrial automation manufacturer and Sparkplug Working Group (SWG) member Opto 22 has updated its groov RIO edge I/O family with a new model, the groov RIO MM2 (GRV-R7-MM2001-10). Designed to facilitate secure, large-scale integration of operations data with business networks, MM2 utilizes the Ignition IIoT/SCADA protocol driver suite to funnel Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Modbus, and other common programmable logic controller (PLC) and industrial device formats directly into MQTT Sparkplug infrastructure.

“When we designed groov RIO, we were looking for ways to democratize I/O data, because that’s what the IIoT is all about,” said Benson Hougland, vice president of product strategy at Opto 22. “Although groov RIO modules can be used as remote I/O with a control system, we also wanted them to operate autonomously, so you could create direct connections between I/O signals and databases, business software, and cloud IoT platforms.”

Where traditional industrial automation devices were generally limited in their ability to communicate with external systems, groov RIO MM2 is a compact, industrial I/O module with multiple networking options, including standard 802.3af Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) and support for standard services and protocols, including DNS, DHCP, VPN, LDAP, HTTPS, and MQTT.

The MM2 provides 8 software-configurable multifunction, multi-signal I/O channels and 2 mechanical relays, and with the addition of Ignition Edge 8, it can communicate across a range of common industrial protocols. Designed by SWG partner Inductive Automation, the Ignition platform allows the MM2 to function as a gateway to PLCs and other third-party devices, so that, rather than dealing with a tangle of point-to-point connections and security vulnerabilities, users can manage all industrial data through a common, scalable Sparkplug infrastructure.

Additional communication options include an extensive REST API and embedded OPC UA server (with Ignition), as well as advanced signal processing, data aggregation, and database and web service transactions through the embedded Node-RED environment and runtime.

The browser-based management interface and per-channel I/O type and signal-processing options support 14 different field I/O signals and circuits in over 200,000 combinations, without requiring a master control unit. With multiple power and mounting options as well as an extended operating temperature range and UL Hazardous Locations and ATEX approvals, groov RIO MM2 is easily installed in most industrial environments.
