RISC-V Europe 2024 Summit recap "How to leverage Open Source in Industry", by Jean-Roch Coulon, Thales (Thales Silicon Security).
Jean-Roch, a CPU enthusiast and a main committer of the #CVA6 repository, explained how to leverage open source for industry.
RTL alone is nothing, the added value is verification and certification. He takes a look into why Open Hardware is behind Open Software and shows how the collaboration in OpenHW is driving with members like 10xEngineers, PlanV, UC Santa Barbara, ETH Zürich, Kalray and many more.
The collaboration is great; a few examples (sorry for the many others we omit): Axelera AI worked on Vector extension, Hypervisior extension is done by Universidade do Minho, HDPC Cache is added by CEA-List and OpenHW Group our Michael Thompson and Mario Rodriguez help on the verification, a real hands on of many.
The best part is when Jean-Roch shows why it is better to collaborate on OpenSource instead of forking it (7:28). But if you want to get out the best for your company: you need to get involved (don't believe us, watch the video). IP protection? Yes, there is a solution! And what about product liability? Ha, we answer that!
Jean-Roch made a fashionable choice of sporting a orange T-Shirt with a big CVA6 on it, we love it!
